Karen Carpenter recorded a solo album, during the time her brother Richard was undergoing treatment for addiction to prescription drugs. It was produced by Phil Ramone (Billy Joel’s producer) and used several members of Joel’s band. Upon completion, both Richard Carpenter and A&M boss Jerry Moss felt the public weren’t ready to hear Karen’s voice without the trademark Carpenters harmonies, and the album was not released (much to Karen’s disappointment). It finally saw the light of day in the mid-90’s, well after Karen’s death. I don’t know if it’s still available, but it’s simply called “Karen Carpenter”.
