Best Way to Keep My Kid From Doing Drugs.?
Question by Aaron B: Best way to keep my kid from doing drugs.?
Hi,
I am having my first child very soon, he can come any day now and I’m scrambling around frantic worrying about doing everything right. One concern that I just can’t seem to shake from my mind is drug use, quite a few people in my family have had issue’s with drugs and alcohol, myself included, I have been sober now for over a year and will never go down that road again, but now I’m terrified that the gene or whatever it is that drives members of my family into these addictions is going to get passed on to my son. My wife does not have this addictive personality and there is really only one member of her immediate family that has had any issues with addiction, so I hope that helps me tip the scales.
So to my question. What can I do to help prevent my son from going down that road, what are the best ways of preventing drug use, experimenting with drugs…etc etc? I’m totally clueless when it comes to prevention, I know a thing or two about how to stop and how to avoid relapse, but preventing it from happening all together, I know nothing about.
I know it may seem silly to some of you reading this that I am seeking ways to prevent my child from getting into drugs before he’s even born, but I just can’t stop worrying about it and I want to be prepared. I just want him to have a good life and not have to see or experience to much of the dark, ugly side of life, like I’ve had too. I want to break the chain right here and right now with this boy. Addiction has been burning it’s way through my family tree for generations now. I managed to trace it as far back to my great grandfather being an alcoholic, my fathers Dad was a drinker and bootlegger out of Chicago, my Moms mom died very young from complications related to drinking, my Mom, my brother, sisters, I want this to stop now.
I know I can’t protect him from everything but I will do anything to protect him from as much as I possibly can. So any help and advice would be really appreciated.
Thank you!
