I Am About to Start Outpatient Treatment for Drug Addiction, How Do I Tell My Family?

Question by anonymous tipster: I am about to start outpatient treatment for drug addiction, how do I tell my family?
I have been addicted to painkillers for over three years now, and recently it has taken complete and total control of my life. Everyday is surrounded by obtaining drugs and doing them. That is all that matters. I have lost all of my money and belongings and just want to get my life back on track.

I have decided Monday morning I am starting an outpatient treatment program to try and remain sober. I told my wonderful girlfriend and she couldn’t be happier, I am so lucky to have such a supporting woman in my life. I have kept this to myself and no one knows my addiction other then her and my dealer. I would love to tell my familty to get their support, but my family isn’t too supportive.

I feel that if I told my family they would look down on me. I don’t have the best relationship with my parents and I feel and know that they will just put me down. I want to tell them and really do need their support to recover completely. I just don’t know how to tell them?

Anyone ever gone through this, what would you suggest? Thanks.

Don’t tell them yet. Part of your treatment will be to provide support for you during this time. Wait until you have that support first. Then bring up the problem in the treatment group. This is a common problem that others will be struggling with, and you can handle it better when you have support from a group like that. This is a decision you don’t need to make right now.
