How to Overcome My Addiction to Online Porn?

Question by : How to overcome my addiction to online porn?
I know of rehabs where a person can go to detox from drugs and /adddiction. Where can I go to get help with my onlne porn addiction? It’s ruining me! I should study for a college exam and hold down a job but I quit my job to look at porn (my mom pays my way and lets me live in her attic) and now I want to go to porn sites and look at barely legal girls instead of doing anything else. How do I get help?!?!?! Also, will my mom’s insurance pay for me to get better?

Awww I am sorry to hear it. Admitting it is half the battle. I actually watched some porn for a little while. I had to quit cold turkey. I think that’s the only way. To make the choice to stay far far away. And it probably helps that I have God and church and other things to distract my mind. Sometimes yahoo answers distracts my mind lol…but I think every addiction must not only be removed but replaced, because if it’s not replaced you just have an empty spot. The longer you spend not doing something, the less you are tempted to do it. There are other things I gave up that I don’t miss anymore. Soap operas are another example. I’m a woman lol….Oh and maybe you have a root problem that can be covered by insurance. Maybe you can just go see a counselor or something…since I am not sure if there is a porn equivalent to AA…Best wishes to you!!!

  • Addiction WayOut says:

First of all, it is great that you understand that you need help to overcome a problem. Porn addiction is becoming an epidemic due to the immediate and free access offered by the Internet. You are not alone and unfortunately, it does have devastating effects. Any good therapist who has lots of experience in addiction treatment should be able to help you — it should not matter if it is alcohol, drugs, gambling or porn. A truly professional counselor will know the protocol for working with you. They should understand that for porn addiction, there is the added challenge of accessibility. With alcohol, for example, you can remove it from your home and avoid places that serve alcohol until you can handle the temptation. With internet, it may not be possible for you to avoid access to a computer — but that is certainly an option. Eventually, you have to learn to be able to live with the Internet in your life.

Concerning insurance, you should ask about coverage for psychological care. There are rehabs that will treat you but you may be able to live at home and get ambulatory care. Consider that what your mother is doing right now is enabling you — she is crating a condition that allows you to not work and watch porn. She does it because she cares about you, but if the choice was to live on the street, for example, in order to be watching porn all day instead of working, you may find more motivation to work on getting control. Something to think about.
To start on your own — start by keeping a journal. Note how you feel before, during and after viewing porn. Start learning the triggers – -that could be anything from seeing the computer to a thought that pops into your head. When you know your triggers, it is easier to get control.
Consider removing Internet access from your home, get rid of your smartphone if you have one or at the last, have your mother install a porn filter.
